In a world that prioritizes production, residency programs offer a place for artists to generate ideas, experiment at their own pace, and, most of all, reflect on their practice.
As one of the oldest continuously run artist colonies in the United States, each year, Byrdcliffe gives artists of all disciplines the opportunity to live and create in the picturesque Woodstock, New York, whose beauty drew Ralph Radcliffe Whitehead to found Byrdcliffe 120 years ago.
Founded in 1902, the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild provides a vibrant center for the arts in the beautiful and unique rural community of Woodstock, NY, while preserving the historic and natural environment of one of the earliest utopian art colonies in America. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement and reacting against rapid urbanization and industrialization, founders Ralph Radcliffe Whitehead and his wife Jane Byrd McCall constructed a community where artists could develop their unique creative vision and inspire one another.
Continuing this 120-year tradition to the present day, Byrdcliffe’s Artists-in-Residence (AiR) Program offers uninterrupted time and space for artists in all disciplines. The serene and rustic mountain community situated on 1200 woodland acres is 2.5 hours north of NYC in Woodstock, NY hosts residencies open to individuals at all stages of their careers.
