About

For Aimee's show in the gallery upstairs at Ink_d titled ‘Cascade' she will be showing all new work consisting of watercolours, drawings and oil paintings in her ethereal and multi-layered style. Aimee Parrott's practice revolves around the deconstruction and reconstruction of pre-existing imagery. She combines digital manipulation with direct observational drawing to create a foundation for paint. Often working from two images that oppose one another, Parrott uses imagery that veers between the domestic and the obscure. In amalgamating the discordant imagery in paint she creates paintings that suggest the ‘unheimliche' (uncanny), constructing an unsettling paradoxical impression of something that is at once familiar and foreign. Aimee's paintings seem to reveal a process of observing and recording over an extended period of time, it appears as though the original source has warped and began to break down, like viewing the past through a history of slides, each colouring the one before; experiencing a sort of cumulative vision. Aimee explains 'I see the process of painting as a negotiation between initial intention and pragmatic response. There is a tension within painting between surface and illusion, I find one often disrupts the other; the mind tries to suspend disbelief but is interrupted by the physicality of the paint. I am interested in this friction; the lack of substance that undermines the fine skin of illusionary space. My intention is to explore this tension in order to pull in to question notions of recognition and representation. '
