Painter Philippa Bower and photographer Kevin Hicks bring two diverse styles together for a celebration of West Sussex's natural scenes in this exhibition.

About

Philippa Bower studied art at the Instituto Allende, an American art college set in the beautiful town of San Miguel Allende, Mexico. As well as learning painting, pottery and sculpture, she also studied the indigenous art of the country. Her work has been influenced by the defined shapes and vibrant colours of Mexican art styles, including folk art.

Throughout a busy life raising a family, teaching, writing and becoming a practicing chiropodist, she has continued to paint and do pottery. For many years she has exhibited at the Arts and Flowers Show in East Preston, as well as selling privately. She is now one of the resident artists at the Pier Road Gallery in Littlehampton.

“I have always loved art,” says Philippa, “and have continued to learn throughout my life. I am so pleased that I am now able to devote the time to what has become more than a hobby. In preparing for this show I have concentrated on seaside and land scenes but I have interpreted them in a way that gives a new look at what are familiar landscapes.”

Kevin Hicks has worked in the photographic and events industry for over 30 years. He now works as a digital artist, photographer and designer.

Kevin trained at Berkshire College of Art and Design in 3 Dimensional and Graphic Design. He went on to run his own exhibition/conference design and construction company for over 25 years and has staged events worldwide. He has worked previously as an industrial photographer and wedding photographer, now specialising in landscapes, animals, architecture, aviation and agriculture. Kevin prints and mounts all of his work himself as he likes to maintain control to achieve the exact results he desires.

Over the past few years he has been working on producing digital art photographs, predominately on the West Sussex coast.

“For this exhibition I have concentrated on pictures of Worthing, from historic buildings to the picturesque seafront,” he says. “It is a town I have known and loved for many years and I hope my love shows through these works.”
