A solo show by Margaret Fairhead RBSA
About
Margaret is a Textile Artist, specialising in machine stitched framed pieces. The current exhibition displays a series of pieces based on a spider plant hanging in her conservatory. With its graceful, long falling leaves, this is her favourite indoor plant.
Starting with just the basic plant she has used a number of design possibilities - the first being to isolate just a small part of the original, creating larger or smaller versions of same, sometimes overlapping. Then a selection was made of hand-dyed and patterned fabrics with corresponding plain ones to “mix and match” the images.
Margaret decided to use the same image for the first four pieces stitching them in different ways – ultimately arranging them in different directions too.
Further pieces were mostly created in pairs, or triples as the interaction of background and surface imagery became the guiding principle.
