Adrian Henri (1932-2000) was born in Birkenhead. He trained as a painter at King's College, Newcastle under Victor Pasmore and Richard Hamilton. Henri first came to prominence as a writer alongside Roger McGough and Brian Patten in the groundbreaking and irreverently contemporary Penguin anthology The Mersey Sound (1967), one of the best-selling poetry books of all time. Henri remained a prolific and respected artist, exhibiting nationally and internationally. In 2000, Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery staged a major retrospective which brought home the range and quality of his painting. This exhibition of works on paper spans his career, and includes better-known pieces alongside rarely- exhibited drawings, collages, paintings and prints.
