Considering the complex relationship between simulation, hyperreality, spontaneity and performance, Ad-Lib is conceived as an extemporaneous act – a momentary coming together of expressions, objects and moments.
About
Exploring the tension between spontaneous behaviour and crafted performance, a collection of work across performance, sculpture, painting and sound are caught in the act – frozen as decoys that lure the real. As we collectively navigate a world saturated with media, signs and spectacle, Ad-Lib looks to question what we know to be real and what we understand to be simulated, and how the blurring of the two might be reconciled. If there is a loss of a genuine, unmediated experience, are there uncontrolled actions – can we be spontaneous?
