AD LUCEM’s creative process had BANQUETE's artists analysing photographic records of institutionalized patients at Italian asylums in the 70’s. From these materials, a hostage and self-defeating body has been built, between unity and fragment, between caress and aggression - a body that is simultaneously oppressive and oppressed.
Byung-Chul Han and his theorization on violence allowed these artists to perceive the body as being dual. Han’s violence of the oppressors dissipates in its context and as a result this body splits to play the roles that historically corresponded to different entities. The question that remains is: can we free one’s body when it is hostage of one’s self?
