Hundred Years Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition by illustrator zumar7.
‘Across the Free Land’ tells a story by using images found on the flags and emblems of countries around the world, sometimes with additional reference to national mottoes (shown in their native languages).
The images follow the adventures of a central protagonist, whose appearance changes as he visits different territories and encounters a diverse cast of characters. These characters and elements are taken from flags and the coat of arms of well-known countries, but also from states, overseas territories, former colonies and states who are seeking recognition.
On some occasions the images have been adapted to fit the story or to emphasise particular moments and the climax of the tale. The complete project will reflect his view of the world as a unique whole that should not be considered in terms of the division between states, divisions that pit territories against one another and increase inequality between populations.
Across the Free Land project will also be printed in a book in an initial limited edition of 50 copies and will be presented and exhibitied at the gallery during the period of the show.
Federico De Cicco aka zumar7 is an illustrator based in Brighton, UK. All his works are made by hand using inks and acrylics, and often a combination of the two. These materials have a tendency to leave serendipitous speckles and marks, encouraging him to create elaborate patterns, like a rough sea or an outer space. In the last few years he has focused mainly on the creation of editorial images for magazines as well as on poster designs, often communicating ideas linked to social or environmental issues. At the same time, he also produces more experimental images based on personal projects or when taking part in art exhibitions.
Llargo Acoustic Session: Thursday 6th of October (During PV, 7pm-10pm)
LLARGO is an indie rock band formed in 2009, that consists of Barbara Giuffrida (vocals, keyboards), Christian De Cicco (guitars), Lele Garro (bass, double bass), Silvio Centamore (drums). The sound is a mixture of acoustic and electric instruments with electronic hints. The band released their first EP “Llargo” in 2013. They will be performing some of their new songs with the vibe of an intimate acoustic duo set, as an anticipation of their forthcoming album.
Across the Free Land book presentation: Saturday 8th of October 5pm
For the occasion zumar7 will introduce the story behind the project, describe a few illustrations and present the book which has been printed in a limited edition of 50 copies.
