Marlborough London is pleased to announce ABSTRACT COLOUR, curated by Lewis Dalton Gilbert. Private view, 26 January, 6-8 pm, Marlborough Gallery.
About
Artists include Remi Ajani, Gillian Ayres, Sam Bakewell, Lynda Benglis, Lubna Chowdhary, Pam Evelyn, Ilse D’Hollander, Caroline Denervaud, Lydia Gifford, Joseph Goody, Andrew Graves, Haroun Hayward, Baraj Matthews, Dóra Maurer, Nicola Tassie, Max Wade and Joe Warrior Walker.
“In Abstract Colour, we have highlighted Gillian Ayres’ practice to punctuate each chapter in this exhibition, in conjunction with other artists working towards similar artistic concerns. Each artist uses their work to tell stories, and express emotional planes experienced while making. While one’s reaction to colour cannot be generalised, colour can function as a universal language and entry point to begin conversations around our own thoughts and feelings.” - Lewis Dalton Gilbert, Exhibition Curator
For this exhibition, Marlborough brings together artists who use colour to represent emotions and relay their own psychological narratives and discoveries, exploring the effect these works have on the viewer. Consciously or not, the chosen colours denote how an artist is feeling at the time a piece is created. Pioneering British artist Gillian Ayres, whom Marlborough has represented since 2019, once stated that she did not plan her paintings and they were not “a direct response to any particular moment or subject”.
