Luis De Jesus Los Angeles is very pleased to announce AARON MAIER-CARRETERO: a hundred peonies, the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery, on view from September 2 through October 28, 2023. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 2nd, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
About
A hundred peonies is an installation of small peony paintings paired with a larger self-portrait. The title of the show is emblematic of Maier-Carretero’s artistic process and his relationship to painting, illustrating his desire to create abundant beauty and the struggle that comes with such a difficult task. In the painting "bloom" (2023), he paints himself naked, cramped by the frame of the canvas, with flowers, held by his toes, raining down on him. Throughout these paintings, generously layered paint drips down against a range of bright and dark - hued grounds, making the forms appear as though some are flourishing while others wither. Or, perhaps, an impalpable color fills the mind, triggering memories of a moment in our own lives, and reflecting on human nature.
