a walk in the woods is Stuart’s account of his relationship with the natural world. The art works represent how he benefits from it and his thoughts and ideas that flow as a consequence.
About
These paintings reflect Stuart's concern with the issues that affect our shared environment, in particular the natural world. Inspired by everything from trees to quantum physics, Stuarts imagery tells the stories of his relationship with the natural world and by extension how we all relate to it through the things we do and the understanding we try to achieve of the world around us and our place in it.
Stuart produces his paintings on location and in his studio. For his location paintings Stuart seeks out interesting landscapes rich in the textures and colours of plants. His enthusiasm and respect for the subjects he finds is reflected in recording of the actuality of whats in front of him combined with a rich and textural painting technique that brings out a sense of an emotional connection with the scene.
The studio paintings Stuart works on are more considered. They’re inspired by ideas that come to him during his location painting expeditions. The current collection of works eschew classic composition with many of the paintings being a matrix of colour across the canvas.
