About

Pigs that can tell the time, spell, do arithmetic and perform card tricks are just some of the ‘educated' animals to be found gracing the walls of Artsdepot from 4th - 29th May. The series of screenprints titled A Sage of the Stage, not a Beast in a Cage by Edinburgh artist Sharon Whyte, tell the story of this oddity of popular entertainment from the 18th and 19th centuries, created using some of the marvellous playbills and publications left behind in archives of magic and theatre history. The artist's intention in presenting this work is to convey the playfulness with which such entertainments were both presented and received in their time and to celebrate a unique piece of history using colourful original imagery combined with existing ephemera. www.thesapientpig.wordpress.com
