About

Statistics are often presented to us in the format ?Every n seconds, x happens?. Charlotte White has taken this statistical format and reinterpreted it through a new multi-speaker sound installation at RED Gallery. Using the voice recordings of over 100 different people reading over 150 separate 'facts', Charlotte has used statistical information varying from levels of tea consumption in the UK to numbers of deaths by starvation in Africa. These samples of information, ranging from the mundane to the poignant are triggered in real time according to their apparent frequency, some as often as every half a second, others only occurring once during the four week exhibition. Each time a statistic is triggered, a computer will randomly select which voice will speak it, from which of the eight speakers it will emit and at what volume, creating a continuous yet constantly changing rhythm of sounds and voices generated by chance and time. As the title implies, the nature of Charlotte's installation means that it is never truly complete. A new set of additional statistics and voice recordings will be taken in Hull at the exhibition preview night on Friday 6th April.
