A New Romanticism

Jenny Brock’s paintings involve semi-abstract or surreal elements; they are ambiguous and aim to be personal experiences, often evoking half-imagined landscapes and otherworldly vistas. The Romantic tradition heavily inspires Jenny’s work, for example, Turner’s expressive layering, Martin’s apocalyptic landscapes, and Friedrich’s sublime atmospheres. However, old and new are combined through the inclusion of contemporary techniques, such as dripping the paint and creasing the canvases. This playful approach is integral to her work’s finished appearance and creates a relationship between process and representation, coaxing images out of the results of exploration.
