An insight into different outlooks on identity

About

‘A Matter of Perspective’ is a deep dive into different interpretations and perspectives on the self, with six interdisciplinary artists working with a range of different mediums to express the intrinsic parts of their relationship with the self.

Through textiles, unconventional materials and sculpture, Alaina Louise is exploring what identity means through the narrative of the hidden identities of socks lost in the washing machine, each finding solace and community with one another and becoming one big friendly ‘sock monster’ and how this parallels the societal behaviours of finding and seeking out similar people to form new cultures/subcultures.

Deepika hand draws seemingly limitless optical illusions resemblant of the traditional Indian patterns henna and paisley in her own stylised renditions.

To emulate the realisation of the beginning and ending of the fluid sub-selves and their own emotions of the matter in relation to limited time and beliefs, Jade will create sculptural and textile works.

Rhianna Marie uses hair in costume and performance in her work titled ‘vertice’ and will explore how parts of herself intersect and how that manifests in the outside world.

RhyanRhyan’s work is about documenting and exploring the Black, Queer, Carribean experience.

Of Nepalese descent, nine (Simmi) uses film and installation to connect the audience with their own childhood selves.

Alaina Louise, Deepika, Jade, Rhianna Marie, RhyanRhyan and Nine (Simmi) are year one fine artists studying at University of the Arts London: Chelsea College of Arts. They will be showing the limited exhibition ‘A Matter of Perspective’ between 27-28th of April 2022 at The Macbeth in Hoxton, London.
