About

A Focus on John Thirtle

John Thirtle 1777 – 1839 was one of the original exhibitors and a founder member of the Norwich School of Artists. In 1814 Thirtle was president of the society.

Thirtle was a carver and guilder and had a successful framing business in Norwich after learning the skill in London and framed many works for the founding members. He married Elizabeth Miles, the sister of Cotman’s wife Ann Miles.

He was a miniature portrait painter before becoming a landscape artist He specialised in Watercolour although some oils do exist it was watercolour he excelled at. Like many members of the Norwich School, he found inspiration in the riverside cityscape of Norwich. its warehouses, bridges and bustling river traffic between Whitlingham and New Mills.

This focus on Thirtle will feature eight works in watercolour by John Thirtle along with a large oil painting by John Berney Crome which was framed by Thirtle.
