A solo exhibition of oil paintings made in secret (after being banned from painting in a dorm) and photography I’ve gathered since age 14. A quiet rebellion shaped by the landscapes of southwest China, Impressionism, and the colours of expired35mm film.

About

An exhibition of painting and photography by a sixth form artist who probably shouldn’t have been painting in his dorm.

A friend actually talked me into doing this. Or I'd never though of preparing for an exhibition at this stage. :)

Everything really started when I have decided to stop my preplaned path of applying to study engineering last year, and instead, I was finally determined to persue art after years of my "quiet rebellion" and struggle/hesitation.

I believe when an artwork is being made, the artist is giving in the value/worth to the artwork. But the artwork only shows its value/worth when it is displayed.

Despite how art is at every little corner of my life, I have never had a true opportunity to exhibit. Not just painting and photography, music as well as been a huge part of me.

This is the first opportunity I seek, the first challenge I take to try to Exhibit my art. I am planning and preparing this exhibition only with helps from my family and my few friends.    My art needs to LEAVE MY DORM ROOM.

This solo show brings together works made secretly (and sometimes stubbornly) in a student dorm room – despite being told not to. The oil paintings, created over just six months, reflect influences from a pretty unsual student. The photography on display was shot on digital and film in Jiuzhaigou Sichuan, Guizhou, and Chongqing, China over the past few years, capturing quiet moments of cultural and emotional depth.

“A Dorm to Leave” is a visual escape. It's about hiding easles under your bed, finishing a painting at midnight, and wondering if being told “you can’t” is exactly why you should.

Also a lot of loose pieces from previous works on display as well. Some refined drawings, prints and exploration of the ancient Chinese art of 岩彩(mineral painting).
