Bringing together for the first time the winner of the Mark Tanner Sculpture Award from each year since its inception. Each artist has been given free rein to create new work, or revisit existing pieces in this new context, and the resulting exhibition will demonstrate the range of materials and approaches that the award has supported over the decade and how the artists' practice have progressed since their award. The exhibition aims to bring both smaller scale and larger ambitious pieces together, in many media, allowing for areas of close interaction and crossover to occur in the space.
Alongside the gallery exhibition we are proud to launch the large format book âThinking is Making, Presence and Absence in Contemporary Sculpture', published by Black Dog. With essays by critic Martin Herbert on the changing role of the object within recent and contemporary practice, a short history of sculptural practice as taught at St. Martins School of Art during the 1960s and 70s by Matilda Strang (independent curator) and an introduction and commentary on the ten winners of the award by Fiona MacDonald (curator Standpoint Gallery).
On the opening night of the exhibition, Standpoint will announce the recipient of the newly national MTSA for 2013-4, who is being selected this year by a panel comprising acclaimed British sculptor Richard Deacon, Head of Sculpture Studies at the Henry Moore Institute Lisa Le Feuvre, MTSA trustee Rebecca Scott, and MTSA winner 2010/11 Jemima Brown. The winner receives £8,000 to support the making of new work, and a solo show at Standpoint in 2014.
Rosie Leventon, installation and environmental artist, will show two architecturally inspired works made from insulation material and raw pigment. Giles Kent works exclusively in wood, and will make a site-specific piece for the Standpoint lift-space. Victoria Rance's sculptures and images explore the human body's vulnerability and cultural power structures. Paul Jones moves continually between real and virtual space, and will show new animated film work alongside small fragile sculptural pieces. Kevin Osmond creates 'scapes' and explosive structures, depicting forms and energy from space. John Summers has a combatorial approach to the making of sculpture, contrasting strong formal qualities and lo-tech kitsch. Clara Clark builds machines and installations which offer perception-altering experiences to the viewer. Paul Carter works with debris and building materials to make floor, wall and ceiling-based structures and installations. John Wallbank's recent work explores hollow forms and enclosure, scale versus lightness. Jemima Brown works with sculpture, film, drawing and assemblage to create characters and mise-en-scène at varying scales.
The Mark Tanner Sculpture Award seeks to reward outstanding and innovative practice in the field of sculpture and are particularly interested in work that demonstrates a commitment to process and materials. Mark Tanner trained at St Martins School of Art and was one of the first artists to show at Standpoint.
