About
TAFETA is proud to announce its upcoming exhibition titled A Century Before, featuring a wide-ranging selection of 20th century African art. and showcasing over 20 works from various regions across the continent.
Straddling the London gallery weekend, A Century Before presents an opportunity for collectors, and enthusiasts to experience a diverse range of African art from the previous century. The collection boasts an array of styles, techniques, and mediums, including sculpture, painting, printmaking, and photography.
The exhibition features work by prominent African artists, including El Anatsui, Uche Okeke, Ben Enwonwu MBE and Iba N’diaye among others. These artists, who were active during the 20th century, explored themes, such as cultural identity, colonialism, Pan-Africanism, and interacted with local politics, through their works.
A Century Before also includes rare and unique pieces from private collections, many of which have not been exhibited publicly before. The exhibition provides an opportunity to discover some of the hidden gems of African art and engage with recent history and modernist diversity of the continent.
Featuring two leading female artists in Ladi Kwali & Theresa Musoke, the exhibition also aligns with the global trend of representing the role of women in shaping the cultural landscape of the twentieth century.
