About

Ben Uri Gallery presents the second of two linked exhibitions under the umbrella title

Brush with Evil. This exhibition showcases two of Laura Knight’s major drawings of the Nuremberg Trials in 1946, studies for the commissioned painting on permanent display in the Imperial War Museum.

Dame Laura Knight DBE RA RWS (1877 Long Eaton, Derbyshire – 1970 London, England) was one of the most distinguished artists of the 20th century, and only the second woman to be elected to full membership of the Royal Academy in 1936. Celebrated for her depictions of the circus and ballet, and as a commissioned war artist, her figurative works are renowned for their extraordinary realism and meticulous attention to detail. This fascinating exhibition is a unique opportunity to see her powerful and insightful sketches after she set out for Nuremberg as a ‘war correspondent’ with VIP status, at the age of 68. Granted rare access to the courtroom, she captured the intense drama of this landmark trial of 22 notorious Nazi criminals.
