About
Having been in residence with us between April and June, we're very pleased to be able to present a solo exhibition of new works by J. Carino. Examining the human body and landscapes in varying degrees, substantiating the convergences in their relationship with mythology, symbolism and reverence these works of nude bodies within vivid natural landscapes, reclaim not only a physical space, but a history of suppression that has sought to marginalise and invalidate queerness. The vibrancy of J. Carino’s paintings could be said to exploit colour as a tool for defiance and celebration, emancipating the ignored from oppression and elevating queer expression and the strength it has come to embody, by choice and by necessity. This particular aspect forms the core of the work, navigating its personal and political complexity, and pushing its overall aesthetic towards radiance and vitality.
