Wonder and astonishment are the genuine elements of Italian poetics and their territory. Does Italian architecture still wish to produce wonder and astonishment? The work of 5+1AA, rendered in terracotta models by Danilo Trogu and photographs by Ernesta Caviola, is on exhibit at the Whitecross Gallery in London from 1 February. It focuses on the theme of architecture as an instrument of perception, and gives shape to the Real and to Context through the articulation of mechanisms of marvel and astonishment. Through Trogu's terracotta models, Caviola's photos and the architecture itself, the elements of form and matericity are set in relation to the theme of "invention within the specific" - in other words, a reaction to the Real and to Context. Each reaction is unique. At times laconic, often romantic, and always deliberately disorienting.
