About
A new installation through the balconies and across the cafe table tops beneath glass. This installation is composed from pocket-size souvenirs from Japan collected by Artist, Alison Marchant. Packaging, event and travel tickets are enlarged, along with panoramic photos made on a throw-away card board camera in 1994. Collected two decades ago to re-emerge vintage, dream-like and futuristic.
Renowned Japanese Sound Artist, Yoshio Ojima has granted permission to play his audio work (1985-7) through the buildings surround sound system. Marchant purchased Ojima's cassette tapes during her 1994 trip to Spiral Garden (Tokyo) which form part of the collection.
Professor Chris Townsend has written an accompanying essay 'The Future That Was' for the show.
Alison Marchant has shown at The Photographers Gallery, Camden Arts Centre, Interim Art, Fox Talbot Museum, Ffotogallery and Manchester Cornerhouse; and internationally at Franklin Furnace New York and Tokyo Metropolitan Museum. Collections include: The Arts Council Collection, London; The Third Eye Corporation, Tokyo and MOMA New York.
