About

iD is a group exhibition by five international artists that revolves around the concept of identity. By taking different approaches to the subject matter, the works displayed in this exhibition reveal the sometimes unnoticed social, political and problematic nature of a concept that as sociologist Stuart Hill argues ‘' [is] never complete, always in process and always constituted within, not outside, representation.'' Identity, be it gender, sex, class or race related, should be seen as a social affair, subject to the influences and constraints of a wide range of opposing forces and a highly ambivalent and unstable concept always open to negotiation. The artists presented in this exhibition explore the implications of a term that since the beginning of Modernity has placed itself amongst our central [and existential] concerns. While in pre-modern societies one's identity was overtly determined by place of birth, tradition and institutions such as family lineage, modern free-floating individuals and collectives face the colossal task of positioning themselves in an increasingly globalised, complex and fragmented world. iD proposes some food for thought for interested audience. By acknowledging the troubled nature of identity, this exhibition addresses the topic from a variety of perspectives that raises more questions than absolute answers. As a result, the viewer is encouraged to engage with the artworks in such a way that might challenge his or her previous conceptions about identity. Participant artists: Sarah Baker, Caron Geary, David Hancock, Risk Hazekamp and Brigitte Stepputtis Curated by Antoni Ferrer (Curare)
