In 2016, CFCCA celebrates its 30 year anniversary in Manchester with a high profile exhibition programme spanning 6 months featuring some of the very best Chinese contemporary artists of today.

The anniversary programme will see CFCCA collaborate with 30 prestigious artists, curators and academics who have each previously contributed to the organisation at various stages of its 30 year history.

Throughout CFCCA’s history it has sustained a commitment to representing Chinese arts and culture in the UK. Today it is the UK’s leading organisation for the promotion of Chinese contemporary art, producing an internationally renowned artistic programme and developing a reputation as a centre for research.

Exhibition programme

During the six month programme CFCCA’s galleries will feature a rotating exhibition of high profile artists who have exhibited internationally, with work featured at festivals across the world including Documenta and Venice Biennale.

Book from the Ground by Xu Bing – Gallery 1, 5-28 February 2016
Xu Bing is an internationally acclaimed artist whose work has been exhibited and collected by galleries and biennials across the world. CFCCA will exhibit the Book from the Ground project: a book written completely in symbols and emoticons. Xu Bing will be dedicating the UK version of the book to CFCCA’s 30 year anniversary.

inStangram by Stanley Chow – CFCCA Shop, 5 February – 31 July 2016

CFCCA launches our new limited edition print shop with a series of exclusive works by celebrated Manchester artist Stanley Chow. inStangram features 30 unique designs relating to Stanley’s experience growing up as a Chinese man in Manchester. These collectible limited edition prints will be on sale in the CFCCA shop.

RareKind China – Gallery 2, 5 February – 3 April 2016

Our first gallery 2 artist is the Rarekind China project delivered by curator Rachel Marsden and artist/academic Andy Cooke. The RareKind China project presents a transcultural exchange between graffiti and street artists from China and the UK. As well as the exhibition the project will be creating street art in Manchester in conjunction with Outhouse Mcr and Heart of Manchester BID.

La Town by Cao Fei – Gallery 1, 4-27 March 2016
Cao Fei is a Chinese multimedia artist. Her works have been critically acclaimed and globally showcased. La Town is the story of a post-apocalyptic metropolis which is made entirely from the filming of sets and miniature models.

The first trumpet in the new millennium by Tsang Kin-Wah – Gallery 1, 1-24 April 2016
Tsang Kin-Wah is a Chinese contemporary artist, known for his paintings and multimedia installations created out of the visual manipulation of text and language. His new commission looks at our turbulent recent history following the new millennium, marked with destruction by the September 11 attacks in 2001.

Gordon Cheung – Gallery 2, 8 April – 19 June 2016

Gordon returns to CFCCA for the third time to create an exhibition that examines the relationship between civilisation and conquest – in particular the social, moral and political climate surrounding China’s emergence as a 21st century global superpower, and the Western anxieties relating to this shifting global landscape.

Between Going and Staying by Lee Mingwei – Gallery 1, 6-29 May 2016
Born in Taiwan in 1964 and currently living in New York City, Lee Mingwei creates participatory installations. Ming Wei’s Between Going and Staying takes place in a dimly lit gallery as fine black sand falls continuously through a broken light bulb suspended from the ceiling, quietly filling the entire room.

RoCH Fans and Legends by susan pui san lok – Gallery 1, 3 June - 3 July 2016
RoCH Fans & Legends is an exhibition and tour finishing at CFCCA for the 30 year programme. Commissioned work by artist susan pui san lok, the exhibition features single-screen and multi-screen moving image film works adapted from The Condor Trilogy, a classic Kung Fu series published in the late fifties.

Yu-Chen Wang – Gallery 2, 24 June – 31 July 2016
This retrospective exhibition takes Yu-Chen's personal experience as a starting point to explore notions of memory and identity, past and future, fiction and reality. The collaborations, live events, drawings and other aspects of Yu-Chen's journey to becoming an artist will be documented and developed into new work. The exhibition will explore private and collective memory of exhibitions through presentation of text, images, documentation and re-enactment.
