About
2020MU: An Exhibition by MJ The Art Traveller and Úna Nic Samhradháin
11th – 18th January
Opening Night: Friday 10th January, 6-9 p.m.
Surface Gallery is delighted to announce 2020MU: An Exhibition by MJ The Art Traveller and Úna Nic Samhradháin.
As we enter the new year and the darkest days of winter, MJ The Art Traveller and Úna Nic Samhradháin take you on a journey of colour, sound, and moving image.
MJ The Art Traveller presents his persona in a 3D video installation, projected onto concertina books. His experience of urbanisation and sensory overload merges in
moving images and sound. Combining collages of recorded images in the form of drawings and time-lapse video, he retells stories of events from his experience as a participant on Sky Arts, “Portrait Artist Of The Year” as well as cultural events in the UK.
Úna Nic Samhradháin invites you to engage with the colourful, complex, and twisting forms that populate her imaginary landscapes, figures, and sculptures. Behind the joyful exteriors, lie deep and foreboding questions regarding the past, present, and future of our environment. She adopts motifs from myth and folklore to provoke recognition of the impact of human self-indulgence and naïve exploitation that distorts the natural balance evolved over eons.
Drop-in Monoprinting Workshop
Saturday 11th January, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Úna and MJ will be holding a mixed-media mono-printing workshop. Participants will either draw inspiration from the exhibition or from their imagination, and then turn their drawings into small prints in a concertina book to take home. The workshop is open to all ages and abilities: no previous experience in printmaking is needed. The workshop will also offer an informal opportunity to talk to the artists about their work. Feel free to drop in anytime throughout the day.
Free
Music for the opening night will be especially selected and compiled by Ben Williams. 2020MU opens in the Project Space in conjunction with the International Postcard Show in the Main Gallery. As always there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Pheasantry.
Free Entry: Everyone Welcome
