About

Over the past 3 months, John Angerson has been Artist in Residence at the Old Diorama Art centre in Euston, London. This new work titled '108.71 Acres' uses the Charles Booth 1890 publication ‘Life and Labour of the People in London’ also known as the 'Poverty Maps' as a guide that surrounds the Art centre. One of the most striking things about the maps was the colouring of each street to indicate the levels of poverty and wealth. Yellow was used to denote ‘wealth’ and black to suggest ‘lowest class, vicious, semi-criminal’. Booth also made observations in various notebooks, using the archives held in the London School of Economics library these entries can now be cross-referenced onto modern-day maps. These markers give a fairly accurate location of where an entry was made. With this information, John Angerson set out to document those places as they are today. Without any pre-planning or agenda, working similarly to Charles Booth; to simply record a place. The exhibition runs from October 30th to 10th November. Open Weekdays 9am-10pm & 9am-6pm at Weekends. Old Diorama Art centre, 201 Drummond Street, Regent's Place, London, NW1 3FE.
