The concept of this exhibition will be based around common preferences in gray-scale by selected authors and the different approaches and perceptions in black and white – Art works will vary in mediums such as drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, media installation and other.
About
In the beginning there was a light. The light creates situations. The day and the night. These two forces carry a lot of contents: visible – invisible, spotless – sinister, surfaced – fundamental, empty – significant, 0 – 1
Behind the corner, in the shadows, in the deep forest, in the darkness, where eyes can't see the shapes, there can be something unexpected - there is opportunity for imagination.
The division between black and white as ideological tool informs us about separation, creating conflict, promoting ideology and authorities. A historical example is the Christian church calling the rituals of non- Christian and pagan religions black mass and raising the hunt for witches based on fear of the unknown and the unfamiliar; This can compare to the very relevant topic of today's tendency towards extremism and fascism around Europe.
All mediums are specific expressions of black and white. Light parts in the drawing are usually empty areas on paper while the artist draws the shadows, which concludes that the black is significant. Opposed to that, photography is made of exposure of light. In digital coding, black and white become 1 or 0.
