About

Rotate Gallery presents Dionysus by Tom Allwinton. In Ancient Greek mythology, Dionysus is known as the God of wine, fertility, festivity, rituals, insanity, vegetation, ecstasy and the sublime.

As Dionysus Eleutherius (โ€˜the liberatorโ€™), his wine, music and ecstatic dance free his followers from self-conscious fear and care, and subvert the oppressive restraints of the powerful. Nietzsche in his book โ€˜The Birth of Tragedyโ€™ said that art is a combination of the philosophies of both Dionysus and Apollo (Apollo being the Greek God of order and measure). In this exhibition, Tom attempts to extrapolate and visualise the chaos that underlies nature, using painting as his medium of expression.
