TULCA Festival of Visual Arts is pleased to announce details of its 2024 Open Call curated by Michele Horrigan. Titled 'The Salvage Agency', curator Michele Horrigan welcomes artistic proposals and artwork submissions that consider the agency and role of art in contemporary ecology and environmental study, and those that examine the underlying attitudes that have led to today’s critical and urgent impasse.

Actors Training Programme for Young, Early Career Actors in Merseyside

This is a 10-week professional development programme led by Keith Saha, Co-CEO and Artistic Director for 20 Stories High, along with several incredible freelance specialists from around the UK. Presented by 20 Stories High, supported by Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse with support from LAMDA and Unity. The programme will equip participants with the tools necessary to enter a rehearsal room with confidence in their craft - from demystifying jargon to practical skills building. The 10-week programme will culminate in a scratch night performance for an invited audience.

Eligibility: The Actor’s Training Programme is for artists interested in performing who meet the following criteria; aged 18-30 based in Merseyside, early career (by this we mean either that you have little to no professional acting experience, or that you have some professional acting experience but no formal training in theatre). Preference will be given to artists who have faced barriers when accessing training, people who have experienced mental and/or physical health challenges , and/or people with extra responsibilities at home (e.g. primary caregiver for a relative or responsible for the care of children). We’re looking for 14 artists who can commit to all 10 workshop dates.

The Ellsworth Artist Residency program is dedicated to creating an accessible studio space for artists and is a dynamic opportunity for emerging artists to work and develop their visual art practice. The residency includes professional development opportunities including studio visits with curators, critics, scholars and artists as well as inclusion in a group exhibition in Art Share L.A.’s gallery. A selection committee, consisting of professionals in the field, including curators, scholars, and artists, reviews all the submitted applications.

Eligibility: All artists aged 18 and older who have a passion for art in any creative form may apply.

Display Europe invites individual journalists and small media organisations to apply for a micro-grant. This micro-grants scheme, available until March 31, 2024, seeks to foster journalistic content creation on pressing topics. The initiative envisions a European media landscape firmly rooted in public values and inclusivity, striving to build a collective platform reflecting the diverse realities shared across the continent.

Eligibility: This call is open to small media organisations and individual journalists (older than 18 years and backed by a fiscal sponsor) from at least three European countries. The applicant and/or legal entity receiving the grant should be based in the European Union.

What you get: Successful projects can receive up to €2,000, and the initiative aims to fund 20-25 projects in total, covering both content production and operational expenses.

Artists from across the globe are invited to submit their works for consideration. Submissions can be in any medium, including painting, photography, printmaking, video art, installation, films, sculpture, mixed media, poetry, illustration, etc. The theme for the exhibition is open, allowing artists from any background to submit works of any kind. There is no fee to submit your application, and we welcome you to share your work with us.

Eligibility: The open call has an open theme and is available to all artists.

What You Get: Exhibition and sales opportunity 12 - 21 April 2024

Fee: Submitting your work is free of charge! If successful, a fee of £180 including VAT (for two artworks) or £120 including VAT (for one artwork) for physical works is required to secure your spot in the exhibition.

Immersive Assembly Vol. 4: Dreams & Echoes

Immersive Assembly Vol 4: ‘Dreams & Echoes’ is the fourth annual talent development programme from Mediale. It is a multi-disciplinary residency focusing on learning, peer critique and developing new ideas and collaborations in and around immersive art and technology. The residency will take place between May – November 2024 and will support six UK-based artists/studios to collaborate and develop proposals for immersive experiences.

Eligibility: We are looking for 6 UK-based emerging and mid-career creative practitioners/studios (with 2-10 years of experience), with experience or desire to work with immersive art & tech.

What you get: The artist fee is £4,000, to support your time. Accommodation, travel and per diem expenses for in-person sessions will be covered by the programme outside of this fee. The residency will run in a hybrid format, beginning and ending with in-person activity, punctuated by a series of online talks, sessions, mentoring and workshops. The residency will culminate with an in-person showcase of three new immersive project prototypes, developed by the cohort who will collaborate in pairs, alongside a dedicated University of Oxford academic research partner. The showcase will be an opportunity to present the project to both public and sector audiences.

Pictorum Gallery: Public Art Commission for Queer Artist

Pictorum Gallery is thrilled to announce our upcoming collaboration with a London-based organisation for a queer artist on a public art commission, scheduled to coincide with Pride 2024. Applicants must identify as queer and be available in May and June 2023 to complete the project in person in London. Please submit your portfolio and CV to jenna@pictorum.art

Eligibility: Any artist that identifies as queer and whose practice would be able to be transferred to a public art mural.

What you get: The successful applicant will receive a large commission (exact amount dependent on experience, but a minimum of around £10,000 which will cover all expenses and materials they need for the project). They will also benefit from press and marketing for the launch of the mural.

Residencies are normally 2 weeks . No money changes hands but accommodation and working space is provided for free and we aim to share what we have and eat and talk together whenever possible. There is also a culminating show of work for the final 3 months of the year.

The Drawing Year is a full-scholarship postgraduate-level course run by the Royal Drawing School in Shoreditch, London. The course offers up to thirty students the opportunity to focus on drawing from observation for one year. There are no tuition fees and all students receive a free studio space.

Every course offered at the School is taught at postgraduate-level by a distinguished faculty of over 75 practicing artists. Students have three end of year exhibitions and international residency and teaching opportunities after graduation.

The Exhibitions Hub is pleased to launch its third Alumni Commission Award, in partnership with the Live Art Development Agency (LADA) and Forma. Following a 6-month period of research and development at LADA's archive, the selected artist will develop new performance work to be presented during an evening at Forma in November. The outcome is intentionally open to allow for creative experimentation and engagement approaches.

Eligibility: Goldsmiths Department of Art Alumni who graduated between 2019-2023.

What you get: The selected artist will receive:£1500 artist fee, £500 production budget, and a £500 presentation budget. Additionally, Members of staff from LADA and Forma will provide individual mentorships to guide and support the successful artist during the development of the project. Practitioners from Czech Republic, Poland, UK, Italy, Netherlands, Germany and Romania get a chance to be one of the 7 residencies researching the cultural ecology of water in some beautiful and secluded places from Romania's rural landscape.

What you get: The residency covers travel costs from the applicant’s country of residence, accommodation within the premises of the host organisation and some meals, a fee of 700 EUR and a 300 EUR production budget. The programme encourages and assists the insertion of the artist into the everyday life of the village. The host organisation will provide mediation and knowledge of the local context, connect the resident with the local community, document the process of the residency and share available resources for research. Communal meals will be organised on occasion. Depending on each host organisation, means of transportation can be put at disposal (bicycle, car, or information to public transportation).

Fernland Studios is an experimental ecological arts studio offering rest, rejuvenation, and reciprocity. We provide Black, Indigenous, and all people of colour artist residencies, ecological arts funding, and writing retreats at no cost to them and with additional funding to support their practice. Remote artist residencies run June 20 to August 1. Ecological Arts Funding is a small grant for cultural producers to propose programs. Our Writing Retreat is in-person from July 22-27 at Salishan Coastal Lodge.

Eligibility: Selection is based on the proposed work’s connection to Fernland Studios’ mission, vision, and values. Participants must be 18+, and all participants working and living across the United States/Turtle Island in 2024 are eligible, while prioritizing participants in the Pacific Northwest.

Our Place on Earth: Residency with Wonderseekers, £10K Fee Available

The opportunity is open to individual artists and/or artists collective/ groups. They will work with the Wonderseekers team to design, plan, and facilitate a series of creative workshops to guide children, including our Young Design Panel through this process over the 9-month development phase. They will encourage children to express themselves through art, capturing their creative and imaginative responses to local environmental themes.

What you get: There is a fixed fee of £10,000 for the 9-month project. £1,000 of the fee will be paid within the first month of the project to cover the costs of initial expenses. For the 2024 edition, the ALA Art Prize aims to reflect on the nuances of meaning in the concept of care by proposing "Notes on Taking Care" as the subject matter of the award.

Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum - Birds in Art 2024 Exhibition

The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum invites submissions to its annual juried Birds in Art exhibition.

Eligibility: Artists working in all mediums other than photography can submit up to two original artworks interpreting birds and related subject matter for jury consideration for Birds in Art 2024.

What you get:

  • The Museum pays for inbound and outbound shipping of artwork to and from the Museum.
  • The Museum handles all costs associated with wall-to-wall fine arts insurance.
  • Each exhibiting artist receives four complimentary Birds in Art 2024 catalogues.
  • The Museum generally acquires twelve to twenty artworks from Birds in Art each year.
  • The Museum coordinates the Birds in Art tour after the exhibition closes in Wausau. Artists are encouraged to make their artworks available for the tour; however, it is not mandatory. Notification of an artist’s inclusion in the tour occurs in mid-September.

The call for proposals and awarding of the fellowships for individuals in the fields of literature, science, visual arts and composition are carried out by the Cultural Foundation Schloss Wiepersdorf. Information can be found at Individual and Collaborative Fellowships.

What you get: Residency fellowships lasting three months (Mar-May, Jun-Aug, Sep-Nov) with exceptions for Science applicants. Includes room, board, €1200 monthly stipend, €480 material grant, studio access for Fine Arts, and visa costs for applicable fellows.

Entries for the 2024 edition of the international Unpublished Photo contest promoted by the Fondazione culture e musei & MUSEC Lugano are now open. Young photographers have the chance until 15.4 to submit their portfolios of 10 unpublished photos. The aim of UP24 is to embrace & attract new, young & emerging contemporary photographers. Now in its fifth edition, the competition continues to attract a growing number of young, global artists. There is no theme or fees to pay and the four lucky winners will have their work displayed in a public exhibition at MUSEC between 31 October 2024 to 2 March 2025.

Eligibility: All photographers born between 1994 and 2006 can participate.

What you get: The UP24 competition will award the first runner-up a monetary prize of CHF 3’500; while the second to fourth place receive CHF 500 each. The four winners will be also awarded the publication of a catalogue published by the FCM containing all the photographs submitted to the competition, and an exhibition in Lugano, in the MUSEC venue. The costs of these valorisation activities amount to CHF 50’000 and are fully covered by the FCM.

Submissions are now open for 2D artwork to be included in the upcoming exhibition ‘England is a Forest’ curated by Small Works Art Gallery (SWAG) at Sluice [Vernacular] Colchester, 2024. For this event, SWAG will be creating an illustrated forest of small paintings or drawings of trees from around England (and the wider UK) submitted through a free open call. We endeavour to accept all submissions as a democratic contrarian to the status quo of the traditional exhibition model.

The University of Cambridge Museums are inviting applications from creatives to create a touring Pop-Up Museum in 2024 inspired by the theme: Our Planet. The Pop-Up Museum will engage a diverse range of audiences and take the Museums and their collections out into the community. It should be interactive, allowing visitors to handle objects and take part in activities. It will travel to community settings across the city and region in August-October 2024, promoting the UCM. The organisation will deliver the equivalent of 10 full days with a minimum of 50 hours of face-to-face delivery.

Eligibility: We are open to submissions from creatives working in collaboration with other artists/ agencies/ groups with relevant experience. At UCM, we pledge to champion equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, and accessibility and welcome applications from all backgrounds.

What you get: We will be inviting short expressions of interest until 9 am on 19th April 2024. Following this process, we will shortlist up to three successful applications to progress to the next stage. Each application will receive a fee of £1,000 for this stage where they will be required to attend a two-hour workshop with UCM staff to further discuss themes and objects, and develop a small project plan (including a provisional budget) before presenting their final idea to a panel. The Living Summer School (LSS) is a yearly week-long educational program promoting social and territorial innovation in and around the city of Kortrijk, Flanders. Young creatives, designers, and entrepreneurs collaborate with a network of local partners and experts. Culture Moves Europe’s second call for individual mobility targets artists and cultural professionals working in the following sectors: music, literature, architecture, cultural heritage, design and fashion design, visual arts, and performing arts. The Individual Mobility Action supports artists and cultural professionals to carry out a project with a partner of their choice in another Creative Europe country.

Eligibility: The call is open to individuals and groups of up to 5 people, who wish to implement projects lasting between 7 to 60 days for individuals and 7 to 21 days for the groups. The application will be evaluated based on the applicant(s) goal, mobility relevance, long-term positive impacts of the project, and sustainability aspects of the project.

What you get: The grant is composed of a travel allowance (up to €700 per person for a round-trip), a daily allowance (€75 per person per day), and individual top-ups. For the next edition of the Watao art festival, we aim for a Watou shaped by collectives and collabs, celebrating collaborative creation’s diversity and strength. The theme of this year’s open call, “The Smell of Grass is Changing”, represents the adaptation, transformation, and renewal we seek in art, inviting reflection on our changing world and its impact on our creative process and interactions. Internationally acclaimed artist Koen Vanmechelen invites artists for an in situ encampment as an immersive experiment.

Eligibility: We invite collectives or collabs (a minimum of 3 people) to participate in the next edition of Watou Arts Festival. Selected collectives or collabs will work in situ at one of the festival locations and transform that location with site-specific (indoor and/or outdoor) artistic contributions. Thus, collectives or collabs must be willing to visit the festival during the summer of 2024 (6 July – 1 September) to meet with the organisation and to develop their project afterward. Mixed teams with participants from fields other than visual arts are encouraged to apply. The Art Festival Watou is known as a festival where visual arts and poetry merge. Eligibility: Open to emerging female artists over 18, living and working in the UK across various media. Overseas artists can apply for the Overseas Prize. Entries must be recent works, not exceeding size limits, and ready for sale.

What You Get: Winners receive cash prizes, exhibition opportunities, a booth at an art fair, publication features, and more, across multiple categories including painting, photography, illustration, and print. Specific awards cater to artists of African and Caribbean heritage, as well as emerging talents. Finalists gain exposure and support throughout the year.

Fee: Standard entry fee is £25; students pay £15. Entrants can submit up to two works.

Embracing Our Differences is seeking submissions for an outdoor juried art exhibit featuring 50 billboard size images created by local, national and international artists reflecting the theme "enriching lives through diversity and inclusion." The exhibit will be on display January 19 through April 13, 2025 in two locations in Sarasota and St. Petersburg in Florida. Cash prizes totaling $6,000 will be awarded.

Eligibility: All artists, All ages. Print, original artworks, photography 50 artworks are selected.

What you get: One adult and one student will receive $2,000 prize for "Best in Show"

Film London and Arts Council England present FLAMIN Animations, a commissioning programme for four early-career black-identifying artists animators living in the UK. Part of FLAMIN (Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network), the programme aims to support artist animators as they take their first steps into a career working with the moving image, with development support and funding for a new 2-3 minute animation.

Eligibility: Applicants should be experimenting with animation and must be 18-30 years old. This opportunity is for black-identifying artists who have a UK address. No formal education in animation or art is necessary, but please note that current students are not eligible. FLAMIN is open to people working in partnerships.

What you get: The successful applicants will receive £3,000 to create a new animation, along with development support and advice from the FLAMIN Team. Additionally, bespoke mentoring opportunities will be provided by animation professionals in the art and film industries. As a FLAMIN alumnus, the artists will benefit from ongoing profile and promotion through Film London's newsletter and social media channels.

The Artadia Awards provide financial support, exposure and recognition to artists. The awards are unrestricted, allowing artists to use the funds in any way they choose. Each year, an open-call application is made available in each of the seven active partner cities; they are Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, San Francisco Bay Area, Boston, Atlanta, and Houston. Supporting artists equitably is a critical part of the Artadia Award process: we consider the unique populations of each community and are proud to reflect our country’s diversity with an Awardee pool that is over 50 percent female and over 40 percent persons of color.

Eligibility: Applicants must be a contemporary visual artist, making artwork for presentation in a contemporary art context: museum, galleries, arts non-profit, the public art realm, etc. Artadia does not fund filmmakers making films for distribution in cinematic venues, or those working in choreography presented outside of a contemporary art context. Applicants must be currently living and working within the city’s eligible counties and residing there for at least two years prior to the application deadline. Full details in application link.
