Artist in Residence

Community-Inspired Residencies at National Civil War Centre

Updated: 22 March 2023

We are seeking two artists for two 4-6 month residencies (spring/summer and autumn/winter 2023) to create work in any creative discipline. Artists will collaborate with local community groups, families, and under-served groups inspired by our buildings, stories, and collections. The artists will be based at the National Civil War Centre and engage with visitors during the museum’s opening hours. The objectives are to create new works inspired by our collections, develop participants’ creative skills and understanding, and remove barriers to cultural engagement across the district. The target audience includes low-income families, young people, diaspora communities, and disabled people.

Eligibility: Artists with experience working with community groups in any creative discipline. Our temporary studio space does not have a sink, so please consider this limitation before applying.

What you get: Up to £15,000 per residency with a materials and equipment budget of up to £5000. Artists will be supported by the Open Doors Programme Manager, who will assist with event and exhibition planning and marketing. Studio space is included in this residency, Monday to Saturday.
