Wheatley Fellowship 2022–23 Open Call

Birmingham School of Art and Eastside Projects are seeking applications from visual artists for the annual Wheatley Fine Art Fellowship.

The 2022–23 Wheatley Fellowship will support an artist with time and resources to develop new work and ideas which will lead to a public project to be realised with Eastside Projects. Previous Fellows include Joey Holder, Harun Morrison, Sofia Niazi, Bridget O’Gorman, John Wood and Paul Harrison, and Kathrin Böhm.

The fellowship begins in November 2022 with a nine-month residency based at the Birmingham School of Art – home to over 350 students studying from foundation level through to PHD. In the second semester, between late January and May, you will work with a group of second-year undergraduate students from the BA (hons) Art & Design and BA (hons) Fine Art courses on a project negotiated between you and staff at the School. This teaching will not exceed 3 hours per week across the 12-week semester.

Eligibility: Visual artists. We particularly welcome applications from artists who have Black, Asian, or Global Majority heritage, who are from lower socio-economic backgrounds, or who are disabled or d/Deaf.

What you get: Embedded in the School’s community the fellow will be supported by a £9000 tax-free stipend and access to workshops, space, and facilities. During this time they will develop research, ideas, and work which, in one way or another, draws on Birmingham as a site or context. We imagine the residency will lead to proposals, propositions, relationships, prototypes, and artworks that will be developed as a public project with Eastside Projects.

Realised in collaboration with Eastside Projects, and supported by up to £10,000 for production and an additional £1000 artists fee, the form the Fellow’s public project takes is not prescribed. Rather it will be defined during the residency, meaning it might emerge as a community project, public artwork, exhibition, events programme, performance, or online project (for example).
