LDComics Open Call: REVEAL! Women's Comics East Africa-UK

Updated: 21 June 2022

REVEAL! presents less known historical and contemporary comics activity by women in the UK and East African countries.

REVEAL! platforms women’s comics, cartoons, graphic novels in 4 East African countries (Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda) and UK artists with family heritage in this region. This contributes to wider cross-cultural recognition of women’s experiences historically and currently.

REVEAL! will celebrate women’s responses through comics to ideas around gender identity located within existing histories. Work submitted will also reflect on the impact of climate change impact on experiences, especially those living with disability and within marginalized communities.

REVEAL! is inviting applicants to submit 12 pages of comics work, including the cover. Our definition of comic is loose and is based on work that combines text and image (though this is not exclusively necessary). The brief is open to your interpretation and we will celebrate innovation in the approach to the form and to the subject.

Eligibility: The competition is open to self-identifying women or non-binary artists. There are 2 categories for the competition. Category 1: Open to women in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. There will be five East African finalists selected from this category; two from Kenya, one from Rwanda, one from Tanzania and one from Uganda. Category 2: Open to UK based women with family heritage in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania or Uganda. There will be four finalists selected from this category.

What you get: Each of the 9 finalist will receive £2500 and to a 4-day free online workshop to develop their own projects. They will present their outcomes at two one day symposiums in September (UK) and October (Kenya) for a public audience.
