My Carbon Family Sculpture Commissions

Updated: 20 April 2021

Creative Giants, on behalf of Coventry City Council, in partnership with the Coventry City of Culture Trust, are seeking to commission four artists, designers or makers to each create a sculpture for the public art project ‘My Carbon Family’.

Each of these sculptures will be made using one of four materials – steel, aluminium, plastic and paper/card, and installed within Coventry City centre. These materials represent the five primary materials contributing to climate change due to the amount of carbon-intensive energy used in their manufacture.

My Carbon Family is a public art project initially proposed by BBC journalist Roger Harrabin and Artist Simon Bingle. The project and creation of these artworks will be widely covered by the BBC, including a BBC World documentary.

Eligibility: Coventry and Midlands artists and makers particularly sought, although other UK artists are also encouraged to apply. We are looking to open this commission up to as many artists as possible. So, as well as looking for experienced public art sculptors, we are interested in receiving expressions of interest from designers and artists who are new to working in the public realm. We have the option of working with local Coventry based fabricators should you not have the skills or tools to create the artwork yourself, and we are keen to mentor emerging artists through this process.

What you get out of it: Each of the five artworks will be allocated a budget in the region of £8,000 - £15,000, depending on complexity, size and material costs. The funding will cover all design and artist fees, fabrication, material costs and expenses and excludes VAT. There is a separate budget for installation, haulage of artworks and professional fees, such as structural engineers.
