About

During December we welcome two local artists, Peter Shread and Paul Hipkiss, to exhibit their exciting, bold and diverse images. Both specialise in traditional printmaking and have mastered relief and intaglio printing techniques. Peter Shread produces bold, brightly coloured woodcut and linocut relief prints. His chosen subject matters include landscapes, and canals as well as musicians - with all images containing distinct outlines and sometimes distorted perspective. The printing technique which Peter uses involves drawing the design onto a wooden block and cutting away the background before inking the block with a roller and hand printing the art. In recent years Peter has been selected to exhibit in many open exhibitions around the UK, and has won a number of awards including the Manchester Academy prize, and first prize in the RBSA Open Print Exhibition in 2006. Some of Paul Hipkiss's latest works include industrial scenes and architecture, which stems from his background in the Black Country. His works mainly consists of relief prints, with blocks of colour applied by a soft roller through paper stencils. The ‘Key block', which contains the image, is printed on top last of all. In addition to this Paul also creates black and white images using dry point etchings, often showing scenes of factories and engine houses. Most recently he has produced a series of relief prints, looking at the canals in the West Midlands. Paul has exhibited work widely and has notably had work selected for the ‘Originals' print exhibition at London's Mall Gallery. In 2005 he was awarded the Addenda Prize in the RBSA Prize Exhibition and in 2006 was awarded the Tregoning Prize at the Derby City Open. Paul was elected as a Member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists in 2001 and since then he has been the Hon. Curator, undertaking the responsibility for organising exhibitions there.
