Inspired by his perspective as a colour-blind artist and by his science background, Philip's work has developed from observational painting to consider perception in a much wider sense. Feeding equally from research in philosophy, science, art theory and history, the work now includes, painting, drawing, filmmaking, audio, working with the public and public engagement.

In the film and public works our perception of other people, our perception of knowledge and issues surrounding evolutionary theory are all explored. These projects often seek to engage the public directly with surveys, or video portraits. Similar to the pseudo and folk sciences the projects often suggest some truth or meaning, but on closer inspection this becomes ambiguous.

The painted works focus on the details of visual perception. Consequently, colour, the perception of space and visual illusions operating in these areas have become the main themes, along with an ongoing exploration of the relationship between the painting surface and different media. The overall effect is to create bright playful and positive works.

Philip holds an MA distinction in Fine Art from Swansea Met, along with a BSc in Human Sciences from University College London, where he focused on evolutionary theory. He has had works purchased by private and public collectors, including Paintings in Hospitals. Philip's work has been recognised by both The Bath Royal Society of Artists and the Welsh Artist of the Year (winner of the student category in 2010). He was also cover artist for Artist Newsletter magazine (April 2012) and selected by AXIS as one of the top five graduating MA students from Wales in 2011 and 2012. In addition, Philip has been awarded an Arts Council of Wales grant to run an arts project linking art and science with public engagement and run workshops with Cardiff University Biosciences department.
