'IMPRINT' (A Bureau OFFSITE Project at 3 Piccadilly Place, Manchester. M1 3BN)

About

Bureau is pleased to announce the OFFSITE project IMPRINT, a festival of experimental and live improvised multidisciplinary performance events taking place alongside the archival exhibition Music & Liberation, about Liberation Music Making in the UK from 1970 to 1989. IMPRINT is a collaboration between Bureau, Imprint Arts, Bricoleurs Press and Music & Liberation / The Women's Liberation Music Archive.

Between 4th and 7th October 2012 artists abher behn and Zoe Anderson will be hosting a series of live improvisation led cross-platform performances and instal¬lations as part of the first IMPRINT festival, an arts festival that focuses on the work of experimental, multidisciplinary female artists; women who are working at the margins or intersections of their chosen mediums, and outside of the expected boundaries of improvised or perfomance based art. It examines the relationship between space, improvisation and performance, the way gender affects these continuities and how audience/artist per¬ception, reception and documentation affect the way work is histori¬cised and archived. IMPRINT festival will focus on collaborations, bringing together female artists to conceptualise, plan and devise new work through mutual correspondence to be performed and improvised in real-time. These events and performances will be held along¬side the national touring exhibition Music & Liberation, which docu¬ments and houses an archive of women's extant underground music mak¬ing and cross-platform artwork, made between 1970 and 1990.

Music & Liberation: Women's Liberation Music Making in the UK, 1970-1989 shows how feminists used music as an activist tool to entertain and empower women during the 1970's and 1980's. Featuring the work of Jam Today, the Northern Women's Liberation Rock Band, Feminist Improvising Group, the Fabulous Dirt Sisters, Abandon Your Tutu, the Mistakes and many more, the exhibition brings together a diverse collection of women's cultural heritage, to inspire and inform contemporary audiences about the politics of music-making.

The exhibition will showcase rare ephemera and artefacts such as posters, songbooks, t-shirts, instruments and fliers. Visitors will be able to watch films, interact with installations, look at photos and listen to music, including a unique opportunity to listen to unreleased recordings of practices, live performances and studio tracks from women musicians yet to be discovered by contemporary audiences. Ten oral histories, which have been collected especially for the project, will also be available to listen to and watch.

Music & Liberation is based on the Women's Liberation Music Archive, an online archive launched in May 2011 by Frankie Green and Dr Deborah Withers. After Bureau's OFFSITE presentation the exhibition will tour to Glasgow Women's Library, and Space Station Sixty-Five, London.

The archival exhibition Music & Liberation is kindly supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and IMPRINT festival is supported by The PRS for Music Foundation.
