BEARSPACE are excited to present Phenomenon, the first UK solo show by Chicago based, former graffiti artist, Dzine. The exhibition, curated by Hew locke and Indra khanna, explores the phenomenon of “Szwaybar”, a craze central to the youth of Curacao and never previously documented or viewed outside of the Island. The exhibition is part of Deptford X; Deptford’s contemporary art festival, running parallel to the Olympics.
From the show we can gauge Dzine’s indiscriminate approach to different mediums. A hybrid sculpture sits alongside a single fabric painting, achieved with highly detailed embroidery on leather and vintage ornate textile, presented in a custom gilded frame prepared in 24-karat gold leaf. The sculpture, that apes Szwaybar custom made bicycles, is presented on a tiered and decorative pedestal. Its highly decorative form, embellished with 24-karat gold leaf, crystals, jewels, customized pendants and embellished carnival-esque floral arrangements give the appearance of an altar piece. It is this object of desire that acts as a dedication to the Curacao youth that Dzine derives inspiration from.
