Future Everything: Handmade

About

As part of the FutureEverything Festival 2012, Manchester's Victoria Baths will co-host a day of contemporary craft, digital hacking, interactivities and DIY culture on Saturday 19 May. Handmade is an interactive craft fair exploring the intersection between craft and digital technology — a forum for crafters, hackers and innovators to share ideas and practice with the maker community and the public. Artists working in the areas of craft and digital technology display their work in an interactive craft fair designed to encourage visitors to create their own DIY artworks; Manchester Craft and Design Centre provides the opportunity for visitors to learn new skills, and leading artists in the field of digital craft examine and discuss their practice. Running alongside the event will be the Victoria Baths Fanzine Convention, where a variety of stalls containing fanzines from around the UK will be on sale on the balconies around the main hall and female pool and in the former superintendent's flat. Visitors can also take part in workshops to make their own fanzine or contribute to a collective Victoria Baths Fanzine on the day. - Craft Fair Varied artists working in the field of craft and digital technology (ceramicists, jewellers, sculptors) exhibit work in the main hall. Many of the exhibits will be in some way interactive — e.g. the public might be able to get involved in the making process. Exhibitors included textile artists, sound artists, jewellers, and sculptors from around the Manchester area. - Workshops Manchester Craft and Design Centre will be running a creative workshop for visitors to the event. The workshop will be run by one of their makers in collaboration with another Handmade artist. - Fab* Manchester This summit of European Fabrication Laboratories will take place at different venues throughout the festival. (Thursday at Manchester FabLab, and Victoria Baths on the Saturday). They will have a space at Victoria Baths for their summit, with a satellite link to FabLab Manchester. - Fanzine Convention Victoria Baths Fanzine Convention will be running throughout the day. In addition to talks and tours of the building, the Convention will screen Salford Zine Library's film Self Publishers of the World Take-over, which features international self-publishers discussing the ideas behind their work. - ~Flow: Owl Project and Ed Carter The ~Flow project is part of Artists taking the lead, one of twelve extraordinary public art commissions funded by the Arts Council for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad to help celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The installation at Victoria Baths will contain speaker horns from the project, synched with the BALTIC display to convey sounds from the River Tyne at Victoria Baths. ~Flow is a tidemill — a floating building on the River Tyne that generates its own power using a tidal water wheel. The building, which houses electro acoustic musical machinery, and instruments that respond to the constantly changing environment of the river, generate sounds and data. ~Flow spans artforms, blending contemporary and traditional methods. Its wide appeal combines sculpture, cutting edge technology, hand-crafted wooden instruments, architecture, precision engineering and electronic music to create an astonishing audio-visual public artwork.
