About
'Cut!' is an editorial command. It is a creative act, a decision, a severance even, carried out daily by film makers, editors, writers, artists, surgeons, tailors, designers . . . Jack Milroy cuts things with a scalpel, to make virtuoso three-dimensional constructions in paper. He cuts up books, releasing their contents in anarchic new arrangements. New technology is used to manipulate large digital prints, projected onto paper or film, where the scalpel defines edges and new shapes are created by suspension in transparent boxes. This exhibition examines the exciting connections between departures in the current work and innovative early pieces. Cuts and retakes abound in an overview of work covering three decades.Jack Milroy's art is made of visual puns and disturbances,' wrote A. S. Byatt in Modern Painters (2002), and William Packer calls him 'the gentlest of surrealists and the subtlest of conceptualists'.
His dynamic doodles, the drips of paint, old books about fish and insects, and birds and trees, the interplay between works and images, even the art of others, are all re-presented, to make us look again.
