About

Joni Brenner lectures in fine art at the Witwatersrand University, Johannesburg. Using the media of clay, bronze, paint and photography, her practice focuses on the expressionist portrait as a commemorative evocation of the human presence.

She writes:

"All this activity builds my person, is a form of examining life - mine and others, and I understand, in T. S. Eliot's words, that 'it is not the "greatness", the intensity, of the emotions, the components, but the intensity of the artistic process, the pressure, so to speak, under which the fusion takes place, that counts'. He also says that 'humankind cannot bear too much reality', and I know from the way I work, from being an artist, from making portraits, that living is a process of dying but also that in the knowledge of mortality is life."
