Franki Austin - Light is Air -

About

Symbiotic, linked and interdependent relationships are of deep interest for Franki Austin. Evidence of craftsmanship is present in all her work and Austin's paintings appear very calm, almost meditative. Her paintings have been described as ‘light as a breeze and still as air, with dense and complex content'. Her pale, luminous fields of light form picture puzzles which oscillate between positive and negative, coloured and blank fields. Rhythmical, pulsing compositions weave together patterns of connection and reveal changing veils of drawing and surface. Her installations of glass panels, more linear in their approach, bring together history and the present in poetic interaction, carrying tales through time and space. Throughout her life Franki Austin has been linked to Eastern cultures by education, friendships and travel. Through her research at Dartington Hall in Devon, she has developed a fundamental belief in art as an integral part of the life of a community, precipitating her installations of interactive works. She has installed exhibitions interacting with audiences and poets as part of poetry festivals in Birmingham (Symphony Hall, 2003) and Guildford (town and Surrey University Gallery, 2006). More locally, her installation of ‘Talking Story' in Swiss Cottage Gallery and Central Library (2004) invited visitors to contribute to the work by adding their own stories or taking away a line from the narratives installed.
