CONTINUUM - The essence of nature
About
The first exhibition by Mitsuko Hoshino in London since 2009 will open at the Koukan Gallery on Thursday, 25th August 2011. The show will include more than twenty new works in a site-specific installation.Mitsuko Hoshino is a Japanese artist whose work has been exhibited in the USA, Europe and Japan. She was born in Kanagawa, Japan, graduating from Tokyo's prestigious Tama Art University in 1991. After living in London for a decade, she now lives and works in Germany.
Hoshino attempts to capture the essence of nature in her largely abstract work, incorporating her eastern background and experiences with western cultures.
Focusing on lines and strokes, her new body of work is chromatically reduced.
Some of the works are rendered on one or more layers of semi-transparent film, while on others the pigment is absorbed by the canvas. 'Movement and lightness are characteristic of Hoshino's use of colour' (Jürgen Kisters, Kölner Stadt Anzeiger).
This body of work was painted under the deep impressions left by the recent catastrophe in Japan, in particular continuing life in the wake of the devastation.
Previously in London, Hoshino had solo exhibitions at Koukan Gallery (2009) and Daiwa Anglo-Japan Foundation (2003), and in 2007 she was short listed for the Jerwood Drawing Prize. Other recent international solo shows include Gallery Gen, Tokyo (2006), Gallery F.route, Kanagawa (2009) and Artsea Gallery, Kanagawa (2010). Her work is represented in private collections in Europe, USA, UK and Japan.
The show concludes September 13th.
