About
Doors Showcase is delighted to present An Introspective, a new exhibition by graphic artist Luke Embden. He will be showing new work including large-scale graphic prints and customized pieces. A play on the 'retrospective', the title suggests the artist's own self-observation.His work draws from his passion for graffiti, Pop Art and freeform typography. Each work is a spontaneous yet intricate expression of multiple lines and layers, where cryptic words, sentences and phrases are subtly woven, as seen in the Summer Loving risograph and Love London screen-print.
Embden explores and experiments with many techniques, such as screen-printing, risography, retro lining and photograms. Yet underpinning this body of work is a rigor that comes from his interest in drawing. This versatility and proficiency result in a crafted textural 'palimpsest' as well as a playful evocation of natural patterns and animal prints.
Embden's pop sensibility sees his animal pattern takes on a viral-like quality, devouring desirable consumer objects, such as Nike trainers and Munny figurines. It also spreads across a variety of surfaces and materials, from canvas to paper, textile to furniture as well as interiors and found objects. Under this seemingly all-embracing consumerist semblance, conceals his cryptic messages and thoughts.
Luke Embden was born in the UK. He graduated with a first class degree from LCC, University of the Arts (2005) in Surface Design. Embden has exhibited at Urban Outfitters Oxford Street (2011), Oblong Gallery (2011), Bardens Boudoir (2011) and Dalston Superstore (2010) all in London.
