Bodies of Water exhibition
About
An exhibition of original pastels by Sally Trueman.English artist, Sally Trueman, seduces us with her paintings of nudes, both female and male. Her work is sensual, seductive and unusually subtle. She explores through the human figure the theme of intimacy between bodies. Set in a world in which figurative painting coexists with abstract patterns, played out by the reflections of light on water.
Sally Trueman's tantalizing nudes, in intimate situations bathed in light reveals an original imagination. Her paintings take us on an appealing journey into the forbidden realm of this artist's psyche. Her shimmering paintings appease the mind of the viewer. Her work does not fit a particular style; instead connecting abstract and reality, taking the viewer into an unquestionably different world.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica on the 9th of April, 1960. The daughter of an army officer, stationed there with his wife, overseeing Jamaica's Independence.
In early 1963 the family returned to the U.K, where her parents bought a house in Kent. From 1967 through to 1975 the family saw many more posting abroad including, Germany, and Gibraltar.
In 1975 the family moved to Brighton, Sussex, Sally was offered a place at Eastbourne College of Art, but was bored, only attending 3 weeks. The same year she was offered an unconditional place at Brighton University of Art, an infrequent student, preferring to spend her time wondering around galleries.
It was a chance encounter at The Pavilion Gallery where she met the Royal portrait painter John Hughes-Hallett, continuing her education with him until his death. Focusing on that time in portraiture, her bold, yet sensitive portraits captured the inner life of her subject. These portraits, particularly of children, friends and businessmen, hang in corporate and private collections worldwide.
In 2000, Sally and her family moved to the South of France, where she was commissioned to do a series of eight large canvases 114 X 110 cm, depicting the landscape and colour of the region. These paintings now hang in a private museum in New York.
Ten years in France had a profound influence on her working style, which can be seen in her interpretation of nudes in water and beach scenes, which she has become well-know for today.
Returning to the U.K, for part of 2011, Sally's paintings are still inspired by water and reflections.
Sally's work makes up part of the Museum Carcassonne and the Brighton Museum collections. She has had her painting published in a number of magazines and books including, Artists and Illustrator and The Neurobiology of Painting by F. Clifford Rose.
