David Dale Gallery & Studios and Rhubaba are pleased to present There is no there there, two separate, yet cohesive, exhibitions split across the respective galleries in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
There is no there there is the product of a curatorial exchange between David Dale Gallery and Rhubaba, primarily concerned with spatiality in contemporary art practice. For the duration of the exhibitions each organisation will relinquish control of their gallery to the other, in order to present their disparate responses to the curatorial proposition vicariously through the artists Rob Chavasse, Desmond Church, Lara Macleod, Jake Rusby and Lyndsey Wardrop.
Taking Gertrud Stein's quote as eponym, the project aims to explore place, location and the importance of our four walls to the gallery structure and, therefore, practice expanding from this point. Through the exchange space is reified and comes to the fore, site specific work is curated for an alien space informed by plans and comprehensive measuring, site visits complemented by archive pages. Guided by more of an action negating space, than thought about it, the resulting work becomes a touristic exploration posed as a definition.
The exhibitions are accompanied by a publication, intended as an addendum or adjunct. As the obverse to the exhibitions, the texts seek to explore the ideas of site-responsiveness that emerged from discussions around the work of the five exhibiting artists. The contributions to the publication are suitably diverse - from the use of amazon.com marketplace as a self-publishing platform, an essay on the dialectics of space and place, through poetry, to the lecture notes of the semi-fictionalised Edinburgh Psycho-Geography Association (EP-GA). The publication features work by Andrew Campbell, Norman Hogg & Alex Impey, and will be available free from each venue.
