Walking Drawings: Across the Estuaries
The Brewery Arts Centre, 22A Highgate, Kendal, Cumbria LA9 4HE
Walking Drawings, directed by artist Evewright will preview his new films, shot on Silecroft Beach, at The Brewery in Kendal, Cumbria on Thursday 27 January. The photographic exhibition launched alongside this special one night screening can be viewed in The Brewery’s Sugar Store Gallery until 13 March.
Walking Drawings took place over two days in September 2010. On the first day, Evewright shot Walking Drawings with beautiful and majestic Shire horses, Cumbrian Heavy Horses in a 60mph gale. On the second day, groups of walkers from Lancaster, Cumbria and London walked Evewright’s Drawings on a glorious sunny day.
Evewright used a rotavator to dig deep into the sand and used other tools, such as large landscape rakes and an old fashioned tractor, to provide the huge perfect circles on his sand ‘canvasses’.
Evewright says: “Walking Drawings combines the elements - sand, sea, air - to create a new way of making, seeing and experiencing drawing. The Walking Drawings allowed those who took part to express their individual stories within the work, which in itself was both surprising and moving to see. The drawings are a conduit for bigger happenings which cannot be controlled or repeated but which are inherently beautiful.”
The result is two stunning short films and a series of fantastic still images.
“Evewright's work ranges from sculpture to drawing and from painting to film and installations. His Walking Drawings project resulted in captivating work on an epic scale. The exhibition, talk and film screening will bring this amazing project to life,” said Richard Foster, Chief Executive of The Brewery.
Walking Drawings is financially supported by Lancaster City Council, Lancashire County Council and The Big Lottery.
