60|40 Starting point series 2012
This summer 60|40 presents the fourth exhibition in its Starting point series at Siobhan Davies Studios. Each year three artists are commissioned to create new works in response to the building. This year Ane Christensen (metal worker), Fliss Quick (jeweller) and Rhian Solomon (visual artist) will explore the relationship between the Studios’ activities and their own distinct practices.
New works in response to the building:
Inspired by the dramatic contrast between the remains of the original Victorian building and the contemporary architecture, Ane Christensen will make two floor pieces incorporating found concrete rubble. The works will reflect the beautiful dialogue between these two types of architecture and represent a completely new direction for her practice.
Fliss Quick’s response to the Studios focuses on the activity in the office. Highlighting overlooked rhythms and movement of everyday automatic gestures, Quick’s works will bring new significance to this activity. Quick is working with dance artist Iris Chan to create film and sound installations to transform everyday pedestrian tasks and behavior into unexpected choreography. Quick is also writing a blog, detailing her creation process accessible on Siobhan Davies Dance’s website.
Rhian Solomon’s work explores the dialogue between the considered architecture of the Studios and the individuals that inhabit and experience the space. She is interested in how the extremely varied surfaces and textures of the building interact with the organic form of the body and surface of the skin. She has worked with architect and dancer David Carqueijeiro to explore the sensation of touch in the building, through photographic print, film stills and sketchbooks.
