Together Hans Coper and Lucie Rie exerted a
profound influence on the development of studio
ceramics in Britain. They presented a fundamental
challenge to the dominant ideas of Bernard Leach,
based on a Far Eastern aesthetic, by introducing
ideas of European Modernism into their practice.
This exhibition presents major works by Rie and
Coper drawn from mima’s collection. It launches
the long-term loan of the prestigious Abercairn
Collection to mima which features some of the
most significant works by these artists in private
hands, and features major works from the Crafts
Council’s collection, the national collection of
contemporary craft.
Acquisitions supported by the V&A Purchase
Grant Fund.
