Rock Music Rock Art

This exhibition of new work by celebrated sculptor Peter Randall-Page, has developed from the Rock Music Rock Art project which was inspired by the ancient ‘rock gongs’ of remote Lolui Island in Lake Victoria, Uganda. These remarkable natural phenomena have remained silent since this small island was evacuated from ‘sleeping sickness’ in 1907. Sponsored by the Ruwenzori Sculpture Foundation and supported by the British Council, Peter Randall-Page, composer Nigel Osborne and members of the London Sinfonietta recently made the long journey to Lolui Island to re-discover the rock gongs and collaborate with local sculptors and musicians.

Randall-Page’s practice is informed and inspired by the study of organic form, its geometry and its subjective impact on our emotions. The unique environment of Lolui island offered Randall-Page the opportunity to explore his interests in depth and in new surroundings, and enabled him to develop this exciting new body of work. He says: “geometry is the theme on which nature plays her infinite variations, fundamental mathematical principles become a kind of pattern book from which nature constructs the most complex and sophisticated structures.”

Over the past 25 years Peter Randall-Page has gained an international reputation through his sculpture, drawings and prints. He has undertaken numerous large scale commissions and has exhibited widely. His work is held in numerous public and private collections throughout the world and in the UK his public sculptures can be found in London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Bristol, Cardiff & Newbury. He is also represented in a number of permanent collections such as the Tate and the British Museum.
